Today’s issue of the Carmel Pine Cone featured an article on Point Pinos Grill — we’re now open for dinner Wednesday – Sunday with nightly early bird specials and family style dinner on Sunday nights. Come by and see us!

With the culinary team at Pt. Pinos Grill hitting its stride under the guidance of executive chef/Aqua Terra Culinary owner Dory Ford, and much of its permit fight behind it (despite pending lawsuits), the restaurant at the P.G. Golf Links announced new summer hours, early bird specials and Family Nights on Sundays.

Dinner is now being served Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. until closing, with the last seating at 8:45. A recent sampling from the menu revealed several highlights, among them the duck confit spring rolls and roasted baby beet salad for starters, and for dinner, the succulent panseared duck breast with crisp and light “fries” made of panisse (chickpea flour), red wine soubise, baby turnip and tart cherry demi-glace; and the sweet white shrimp and grits with Andouille sausage, yellow corn mascarpone grits, Holy Trinity vegetables, okra and tomatoes. Anyone craving sheer comfort food should consider the pork schnitzel with caraway spaetzle, braised red cabbage, roasted apple and mascarpone mustard sauce.

Also during dinner hours, for the first 90 minutes of service,an early bird option offers soup or salad, entrée and dessert for $16.95. House wine is available for $5 per glass.

On Sundays only, a casual, family-style service from 5 to 7 p.m. features salad and entrée for the table for $15 per person, plus tax and tip. The menu changes weekly.

Wine fans should check out the grill for its list, which is well endowed with interesting bottles at reasonable prices. Because most of his food is on the lighter side, flavor wise, Ford said he does not offer a lot of heavier reds, with just one or two Cabernet Sauvignons included. He enjoys featuring wines from near and far, particularly smaller producers that offer good values — and which many of his customers may not have encountered before.
